Humility Prayer: Embracing the Spirit of Servanthood

Bible Verse: Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, in the example of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, we are shown the highest form of humility. Despite being one with You, He took on the mantle of humanity, serving and loving us with a heart of pure sacrifice. Lord, inspire in us a spirit of humility that emulates Jesus. Break down the walls of pride and arrogance that often cloud our hearts. Let us remember always that true greatness in Your kingdom comes from being a servant to all. Teach us to decrease, so that You may increase in our lives. As Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, let us too be willing to serve, not counting our status, but counting the privilege to be Your hands and feet on Earth. We surrender our egos, desires, and our need for recognition, seeking only to magnify You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Explanation:
The verses from Philippians provide an intimate glimpse into the humility of Jesus Christ. Although He is God, He willingly relinquished His divine privileges, opting instead to take on the form of a servant, to understand our struggles, to be with us, and ultimately, to sacrifice Himself for us. This act is not just about the physical sacrifice but is also symbolic of the mindset Jesus embodied — one of service, selflessness, and true humility.

In this passage, the Apostle Paul is urging believers to adopt the same attitude. This attitude doesn’t just involve thinking less of oneself in a self-deprecating manner, but rather thinking of oneself less and focusing on the needs and concerns of others. The humility of Christ is a central theme throughout the New Testament, from His birth in a manger to His sacrificial death on the cross.

Our prayer, based on these verses and the broader teachings of Jesus, is a plea to cultivate and embrace this spirit of servanthood and humility. Jesus’ act of washing His disciples’ feet in John 13 is a perfect illustration of this. Despite being the Master and Lord, He took on the role of the lowest servant to demonstrate the essence of true leadership and love. Similarly, in our lives, true humility is not just about understanding our position before God but is also about living out this understanding in our relationships, actions, and decisions. The prayer is a call for transformation, to align our hearts more closely with Christ’s heart of humility, so we can genuinely reflect His love in a world that often promotes self above all.
